ROCK HILL, S.C. --- No. 4 seed Brevard College made the
most of their first appearance in the Food Lion South Atlantic
Conference Women's Tennis Tournament by upsetting top-seeded
Tusculum College 5-2 in semifinal action Friday afternoon from the
Rock Hill Tennis Center.
The Tornados (17-5) advance to Saturday's championship match
against No. 2 Carson-Newman College at noon. The Pioneers fall to
17-5 and now await word of a possible at-large bid to next month's
NCAA Division II Tournament.
Brevard took a 2-1 lead after the doubles flights as the No. 1 duo
of Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon defeated Caroline Crowe and
Katelyn Doss 8-4, while Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval defeated
Amanda Pike and Jennifer Sparks 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Tusculum won
the third doubles flight, with Heidi von der Lage and Jessi Smith
defeating Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas 8-6 in pro sets.
BC's Duval was up 5-2 in the first set at No. 3 singles when Pike
had to retire, giving Duval the victory. Shaeffer then put Brevard
up 4-1 as she defeated Sparks 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Tusculum picked up a win at No. 2 singles when Doss defeated
Hostetter, 6-4, 7-5.
Soon after, Brevard's Dixon defeated von der Lage 7-5, 6-4 at No.
4 singles to clinch the winning point.
