Pioneers visit sixth-ranked Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- Sixth-ranked Columbus State University defeated Tusculum University 11-1 in non-conference women's soccer Wednesday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex.

Nine different players scored goals for the Cougars (5-0-0), who outshot the Pioneers (2-3-0) by a 41-3 margin. Michelle Medina and Ui Suzuki scored two goals apiece and Lizz Forshaw had a goal and three assists for Columbus State.

Lauren Barnes, Faith Knoedler, Abigail Akerson, Vanessa Aviles, Mia Robinson and Elle Henschel also scored for the Cougars in the victory. Tanna Bookhamer scored on the only shot on goal by the Pioneers, netting her first career goal in the 47th minute.

Goals from Barnes in the 15th minute and Knoedler in the 20th minute gave the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. Akerson would stretch the lead to 3-0 in the 30th minute, before Medina and Suzuki scored in the final three minutes of the half to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead at intermission.

The Pioneers would get on the board just under two minutes into the second half as Bookhamer carried a feed from Aniya Fisher down the right side and rocketed a shot from outside the box over Cougar keeper Huda Sayedzada for her first career goal at 46:53.

After Angel Chase made seven saves in the first half for the Pioneers, Noemie Tartrou came on for the second half and stopped a penalty kick by Emma Beddow in the 61st minute. However, the Cougars would score six more times in the final 27 minutes, with Tartrou making a total of nine saves in the half.

The Pioneers will open their South Atlantic Conference schedule on Sunday, Sept. 22 when Newberry visits Pioneer Field for a 2 p.m. start. The Wolves were 3-0-1 overall entering the week, including a scoreless draw with Mars Hill in their SAC opener on Saturday.
