Two Top 10 opponents visit Pioneers this week

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Two top-10 ranked teams will visit Pioneer Field this week as the Tusculum University women's soccer team returns home for their final three matches of the 2021 season.

The Pioneers will host Columbus State, ranked 10th in last week's United Soccer Coaches Division II poll, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match, and seventh-ranked Catawba on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.

Tusculum (3-12-0, 2-7-0 SAC) dropped two road matches last week, falling 4-0 at Limestone on Wednesday and 3-0 at Wingate on Saturday. The Pioneers have lost seven of their last eight matches and finished the year with a 1-7 record in road contests.

PROFILING THE PIONEERS
The Pioneers fell to Limestone 4-0 on Wednesday as the Saints received two goals apiece from Selina Boveleth and Azumi Manriki. The Saints outshot the Pioneers 30-3, with freshman keeper Brooklynn Hudgins making eight saves without allowing a goal after entering the match in the 40th minute for the Pioneers.

On Saturday, Alicia Rubio Garcia scored two goals in a span of 2 1/2 minutes in the first half to lead Wingate to a 3-0 win over the Pioneers. The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers by a 27-6 margin for the match, including a 15-0 margin in the first half, and Hudgins had nine saves in her first career start for the Pioneers.

Hudgins leads the Pioneers in goals against average at 1.57 and in save percentage at .857. She has made 18 saves in 172 minutes, 14 seconds of playing time. Sophomore Emma Harriman has a 2.84 goals against average in 11 starts and has made 55 saves for a .640 save percentage.

Senior forward Kenzie Ellenburg and graduate midfielder Yvette Raaijen continue to share the team lead in scoring with four goals and one assist apiece. Junior forward Brianna Garcia has three goals and three assists for nine points, and junior midfielder Bailey Bylotas has contributed three goals and an assist.

As a team, Tusculum continues to lead the conference in percentage of shots on goal, with 89 of their 158 shot attempts on target for a 56.3 percent accuracy rate.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Columbus State enters Wednesday's match with a 14-1-1 overall record and atop the Peach Belt Conference with a perfect 8-0 record. The only blemishes on the Cougars' record are a 1-1 draw with Catawba on Sept. 9 and a 2-1 road loss to 20th-ranked Florida Tech on Oct. 12.

Fifteen different players have scored goals for Columbus State this season, led by freshman forward Emma Beddow with nine goals and three assists for 21 points. Senior defender Maria Kilset has 11 assists which ranks her second in Division II. In goal, senior Sara Halilhodzic and junior Lizzie Hedrick have split time, with Halilhodzic compiling a 0.84 goals against average and Hedrick a 0.63 goals against average and the duo combining for eight shutouts.

Columbus State has won seven of the 10 matches with Tusculum in the all-time series, including a 6-0 win in their last match in 2018. Tusculum has dropped six in a row since a 2-1 win over the seventh-ranked Cougars in 2008.

Catawba (13-0-2, 8-0-1 SAC) remained undefeated with a 3-0 win over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, after playing to a 1-1 draw with Queens on Wednesday. The tie with Queens snapped a 10-match winning streak for the Indians, during which they had recorded nine straight shutouts before conceding a goal to Queens. For the season, Catawba is outscoring its opponents by a 52-4 margin, including a 32-1 advantage in conference matches.

Forward Hannah Dunn, who was named SAC Freshman of the Year in the spring, leads the SAC and is fourth in Division II in both goals (16) and points (36). Dunn, who has missed the last two games for the Indians, has scored 10 goals in seven conference matches. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Jimmo is second behind Dunn in the SAC in both goals (11) and points (27), with 10 of her goals coming in a span of four matches from Sept. 15-25.

Catawba ranks fifth in Division II in scoring offense at 3.47 goals per game, and second in goals against average at 0.26. Junior Sierra Davis is second in Division II in goals against average at 0.23 and third in save percentage at .921, having allowed just three goals in 1165 minutes with 35 saves.

The Indians beat the Pioneers 1-0 in their 2021 spring season opener in February and took the lead in the all-time series 11-10-4.
