GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- An exchange of first-half goals led Tusculum University and Newberry College to a 1-1 draw in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Brooke Radcliffe scored in the 31st minute for the Pioneers (5-4-2, 3-2-1 SAC) and Salley Slice answered seven minutes later for the Wolves (4-5-1, 0-4-1 SAC), who were outshot by Tusculum 22-7 including 6-2 in overtime.
Newberry had the first shot attempt in the 4th minute, but Tusculum keeper Hannah Graham made the save off the foot of the Wolves' Ellie Finneran. Tusculum then had the next six shot attempts, including a try from Kaitlyn Watson in the 12th minute that went wide after Wolves keeper Jayleen Gant came out too far to play a loose ball.
The Pioneers got on the board with 14:47 left in the first half as a pass from Sonja Ballmert connected with Katja Andersson toward the right side of the box. Andersson dribbled once, then served a perfect pass across to Radcliffe who deposited her second goal of the season.
The Wolves evened the score at 1-1 with 7:58 to play in the half as a misplay in the defensive end allowed Slice to come up with the ball, then chip over an oncoming Graham from 20 yards for her fifth of the season.
Andersson nearly gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with just over six minutes to play in the half, but her shot that went past Gant went off the outside of the far post. Tusculum finished the half with a 9-2 advantage in shots, but Gant had three saves for Newberry.
In the second half, the best chance for the Pioneers came in the 82nd minute as Watson blasted a shot from 25 yards that was deflected wide of the frame. Tusculum outshot Newberry 7-3 in the second half, but Graham and Gant had two saves apiece in their respective goals.
Tusculum cranked up the pressure in overtime, putting four shots on goal in the first 5 1/2 minutes. A header by Radcliffe in the first two minutes was sent aside by Gant, then a header by Kenzie Ellenburg off a corner was cleared off the line by the Wolves' Emma Harms. Gant then made a sliding save on a try from 15 yards out by Kate Guildford.
In the second overtime, Newberry had a chance in the first two minutes as Daphne Heyaime chipped a shot over the goal. Andersson had a shot smothered by Gant from 15 yards out midway through the overtime, and an attempt by Watson was grabbed in the final 40 seconds to finish off the draw.
Gant finished with 10 saves in goal for the Wolves, while Graham had three saves for the Pioneers. Tusculum had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, while Newberry was called for eight fouls to six by the Pioneers.
Tusculum will be back home on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Shaw in a non-conference match at Pioneer Field.
