Tusculum seeded sixth, open at Newberry in SAC Women's Soccer Tournament quartefinal

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's soccer team will be the No. 6 seed and open South Atlantic Conference Tournament play on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to South Carolina to take on third-seeded Newberry College. The SAC Tournament quarterfinal match-up will kick off at 1:30 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex.

The two teams will meet for a second time in four days as Newberry posted a 5-1 win over the Pioneers last Friday night at Pioneer Field.

Tusculum (10-7-1) finished the SAC regular-season with a 6-5 league record for its 18 points. Newberry earned the tournament's No. 3 seed with its 8-2-1 conference record for 25 points.

Tusculum is vying for its fifth SAC Tournament championship having won the league postseason title in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Tuesday's match-up will mark the third time the Pioneers and Wolves have squared off in the SAC Tournament quarterfinal round, both Tusculum victories (2000, 2001), propelling TC to SAC Tournament titles in each.

In its 15 previous SAC Tournament appearances, the Pioneers have advanced past the quarterfinal round in all but three occasions (2006, 2008 and 2011). Tusculum owns an impressive 18-8-5 record in the SAC Tournament.

The winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal will advance to Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, South Carolina for Friday's semifinal against either No. 2 Wingate University or No. 7 Queens University of Charlotte. That semifinal match will kick off at 4 p.m.

The 2014 SAC Tournament championship match is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Manchester Meadows. The SAC Tournament champion will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
