JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- Taylor Lewis scored
the match-winning goal in the 88th minute as the Tusculum College
women's soccer team defeated arch-rival Carson-Newman University
1-0 Monday night at McCown Field in South Atlantic Conference
action.
With the victory, the Pioneers (10-6-1, 6-4 SAC) clinch the
program's fourth consecutive 10-win season and extend the
Tusculum's streak of 17 straight non-losing campaigns.
Locked in a scoreless deadlock, Lewis worked her way into the right side of the C-N penalty area and deflected a pass from Jenique Thombs into the back of the net inside the far post with 2:21 remaining in regulation. For Lewis, it was her team-leading ninth goal of the season and her SAC-best fifth match-winner of the year.
The Eagles (3-12, 1-9 SAC) got off a desperation shot in the final seconds as Mikayla Gregg sent in a long blast from outside 30 yards that was heading towards the top left corner of the goal. But Tusculum senior keeper Marissa Williams punched away the would-be equalizer and preserve TC's fifth straight victory over their Jefferson City rivals.
Williams recorded her fifth shutout of the season and 30th of her stellar career, which is already a program and South Atlantic Conference record. She faced nine C-N shots, while posting six saves on the night.
Carson-Newman keeper Katy Hill finished with three saves of the six shots taken by the Pioneers.
Lewis has scored a goal in her last three matches with the last two resulting in match-winners for the Pioneers.
Tusculum will host Newberry College on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. from Pioneer Field in the regular-season finale for both teams. It will also be Senior Night for the Pioneers.
