GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Catawba College keeper
Bethany Davis stopped a penalty kick with 19.9 seconds remaining to
preserve a 1-0 South Atlantic Conference win over host Tusculum
College Monday afternoon at Burley Stadium. The match was played
on the Greeneville High School campus due to wet field conditions
at Tusculum's Pioneer Field.
In the final moments of regulation, Tusculum's Shannele Sunderland
was fouled in the penalty area by Davis when she came off her line
for a loose ball and was whistled for the infraction to set up a
potential match-tying penalty kick.
Tusculum senior Nikki Arthur took the penalty shot, but her equalizing effort towards the left post was turned away by Davis in securing her first shutout of the season.
The Indians (8-4-1, 4-3 SAC) scored in the 38th minute as Kiersten Peck sent in a corner kick which was headed in by Allison Parker her first goal of 2014 and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Peck finished the match with six saves, while Tusculum senior keeper Marissa Williams accounted for three saves in the loss. With her three saves, Williams becomes the program's all-time leader in saves with 293, breaking the previous mark by Tusculum Sports Hall of Famer Jennie Murphy (292 from 1999-2002). Williams already holds schools records with her 5,966 minutes played and 28 career shutouts.
Tusculum out-shot Catawba by a 16-6 margin, including 10-2 in the final 45 minutes. The Pioneers also have their three-match winning streak snapped.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday for a South Atlantic Conference match at arch-rival Carson-Newman University. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m. from McCown Field in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
