Tusculum Women's soccer blanks King for fourth straight win

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive victory with a 1-0 win over visiting King University Monday night at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneers (5-1-1) have posted five straight shutouts and have not allowed a goal since the first half of their road match at Ashland University, a span covering 521 minutes.

Tusculum junior Taylor Lewis kicked in the match-winner in the 54th minute as she gathered in a cross from Jenique Thombs and deflected the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was Lewis' third goal of the season and second match-winner of 2014.

TC controlled possession for most of the contest, out-shooting the Tornado (4-3) by a 26-8 margin, including 15-1 in the first half. Jordan Newby led TC with a match-high seven shots, including three on goal. In the 36th minute, Newby fired a pair of quality shots on frame, but both were turned away by KU keeper Olivia Drake.

Gabrielle Whitt, Lewis and Thombs all finished with five shots each for the Pioneers.

Tusculum sophomore keeper Miriah Martin improved her record to 3-0-0 with her second shutout of the year, as she finished with a save.

Drake accounted for 10 saves on the night as the Pioneers also owned an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Tusculum will play its third contest in five days when the Pioneers host nationally-ranked Columbus State University this Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Cougars (4-0-1) are currently ranked fifth in the country according to the latest NSCAA Division II Poll.
