20th-ranked Wingate picks up victory over Pioneers

WINGATE, N.C. --- Wingate University used two scoring runs to collect a 20-4 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium.

Danielle Scarfogliero had four goals and two assists and Megan Millard scored four goals for the 20th-ranked Bulldogs (8-1, 3-0 SAC), who scored the first seven goals and then went on an 11-goal surge that spanned more than 30 minutes. Kaleigh Wilgeroth added two goals and four assists and Nelida Watson had three goals for Wingate, which outshot Tusculum 36-6.

Kayla Nuccio scored two goals for the Pioneers (4-5, 1-3 SAC), with a goal apiece from Mya Halladay and Cassidy Bourne. Tusculum had 22 turnovers in the match and lost the draw control battle to Wingate by a 21-6 margin. The Bulldogs also had a 26-11 edge in ground balls over the Pioneers.

Wingate led 7-0 after 6 1/2 minutes before Nuccio scored with 7:07 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 11-1 after one quarter and 16-1 at halftime, and Wingate had a 19-1 edge until Halladay scored with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Bourne and Nuccio would add goals for the Pioneers in the final nine minutes of the fourth quarter after Wingate wrapped up its scoring with 11:00 to go.

Sophie Pavlick had eight draw controls and Kathryn McCabe finished with six draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Bulldogs. Halladay and Liberty Jones each had two draw controls for the Pioneers, who received four ground balls and three caused turnovers from Mackenzie Sherrod along with three caused turnovers from Celeste Raya.

Emily White finished with 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Wingate keeper Riley Boone had a pair of stops for the Bulldogs.

Tusculum plays its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, March 19 at Thomas More beginning at 3 p.m. The Saints are 0-7 following a 20-6 loss to Montevallo on Tuesday afternoon.
