UAH earns 19-8 rain-soaked win over Pioneers

GATLINBURG, Tenn. --- The University of Alabama at Huntsville collected a 19-8 victory over Tusculum University in non-conference women's lacrosse Wednesday afternoon at a rain-soaked Rocky Top Sports World.

Sarah Cole and Isadora Springer each scored five goals and had an assists, while Maya Bronson had two goals and four assists for the Chargers (6-2), who outshot the Pioneers (3-5) by a 33-13 margin.

Lucy Brewer led the Pioneers with three goals, with two goals apiece from Zuza Stasiak and Mackenzie Sherrod. Cassidy Bourne had a goal and an assist for Tusculum, with two assists from Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg and one assist each from Liberty Jones, Emma Miller and Paetyn Hoffmann.

UAH went up 2-0 after five minutes before the Pioneers got on the board on a goal from Stasiak with 8:$8 left in the first quarter. A goal from Sherrod with 1:28 remaining in the period left the Pioneers facing a 6-2 deficit after one.

Sherrod's second goal of the day broke a five-goal run for UAH with 7:08 left in the second quarter, and a goal from Bourne with 4:03 remaining would be the last of the half as the Chargers led 12-4 at intermission.

Brewer and Stasiak scored third-quarter goals for the Pioneers, while Brewer scored twice in two minutes late in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring for Tusculum.

In addition to her three goals, Brewer led the Pioneers with six ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers. For Alabama Huntsville, Cole had four draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Riley Kirby had four caused turnovers and Shannon Finch had seven draw controls.

Alabama Huntsville had an 18-12 edge in draw controls and led the Pioneers in ground balls by a 23-17 margin. The Chargers were 13-for-18 on clears, while the Pioneers were successful on 11 of their 23 attempts.

Emily White played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and made eight saves. For UAH, Tori Ryan had three saves in 50 1/2 minutes and Margot Haring made one save in 9 1/2 minutes.

Weather has impacted Tusculum's next scheduled home game against Wingate, which has been moved up one day and will be played Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The 16th-ranked Bulldogs beat Newberry 17-6 on Wednesday to improve to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC.
