Brewer reaches 100 career points at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Newberry College defeated Tusculum University 17-5 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

The Pioneers' Lucy Brewer scored two goals to become the eighth player in Tusculum program history to reach 100 career points, but Newbery's Ella Todd had four goals and two assists to lead the Wolves to the victory.

Brewer reached the 100-point milestone when she scored with 11:44 left in the second quarter. Brewer would add her 101st point for the Pioneers (3-4, 1-2 SAC) when she scored her 83rd career goal early in the fourth quarter, as she reached the milestone in her 39th career game.

Todd scored two goals in the first quarter and Trysten Burns scored twice in the second quarter to help the Wolves (3-3, 2-0 SAC) build an 8-1 lead at halftime. Six different players scored in the third quarter to help Newberry extend its lead to 14-2, with the Pioneers netting half of the six fourth-quarter goals on tallies from Brewer, Kylie Marek and Liberty Jones.

Cassidy Bourne also scored for the Pioneers, who were outshot 38-17 by the Wolves in the match. Serena Elias had three goals for the Wolves, with two goals and an assist from Jaie Burns and Marissa Plumer.

Brewer led the Pioneers with three ground balls and two draw controls, while Jones had two ground balls and two draw controls. For Newberry, Lana Howell and Plumer each had three draw controls, with three ground balls apiece from Burns and Madalyn Messersmith.

Emily White had 11 saves in goal for the Pioneers, who were 8-for-15 on clears and had 18 turnovers. Newberry received nine saves from Kaitlyn LaManna in the first three quarters and zero saves from Cheyenne Jess in the fourth quarter. The Wolves went 14-for-17 on clears and had 15 turnovers as a team.

The Pioneers are scheduled to host Alabama Huntsville in their next match on Wednesday, March 6 at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Chargers (4-2) beat Ashland 20-8 on Saturday in the first of back-to-back games this weekend, with a match against Thomas More scheduled for Sunday.
