Pioneers defeated on road by Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. --- Lander University defeated Tusculum University 20-3 in non-conference women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium.

Mickey Burnett scored four goals, Izzy Olson had three goals and two assists and Emmy Peterson added three goals and an assist for the Bearcats (2-1), who had just 32 shot attempts in the match. Alyssa Suchan had two goals and three assists and Kasey Bronco finished with two goals and two assists for Lander in the victory.

Tusculum (1-2) scored the opening goal of the match from Liberty Jones just 56 seconds into the first quarter, then scored the final two goals from Abby Lockwood with 2:36 remaining and from Lucy Brewer on a free-position shot as time expired.

Jones and Zuza Stasiak led the Pioneers with four draw controls apiece, while Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg had three ground balls and a career-high five caused turnovers. For Lander, Suchan had a team-high six draw controls, Tiyonna Hall had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Autumn Huskey had three caused turnovers.

Lander finished with an 16-9 edge in draw controls and an 18-17 advantage in ground balls, along with a 32-23 margin in shots. Tusculum was 11-for-18 on clears in the match while Lander was 17-for-20 as a team.

Emily White played the first half in goal for the Pioneers and made seven saves, with Riley Vergano (20 minutes) and Mackie McCotter (10 minutes) sharing time in the second half. McCotter had three saves for the Pioneers. For Lander, Taryn Samons made five saves in the first half and Zoe Cotheran made six saves in the second half.

The Pioneers will host Limestone in their South Atlantic Conference opener on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Pioneer Field at 3 p.m. The Saints are 2-0 heading into a home match with Montevallo on Sunday at 4 p.m.
