Anderson scores in closing seconds for 14-13 win over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Hannah Thomas scored the game-winning goal with 18.2 seconds remaining as Anderson University rallied in the final two minutes for a 14-13 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.

Thomas' fifth goal of the match capped a rally from a two-goal deficit for the Trojans (7-3, 2-1 SAC), who tied the game on two goals by Alicia Cannon in a span of 47 seconds after the Pioneers had gone up 13-11 on a goal from Abby Lockwood with 2:25 remaining. However, the Pioneers would not have another possession as the Trojans won the final four draws of the match.

Four of Thomas' five goals came on free-position shots, on which Anderson scored eight goals in 18 attempts. Tusculum had just two free-position attempts in the match, both in the first half, and scored on each. Laine Stanton had three goals and two assists and Gwen Ontiveros scored three times for the Trojans, who outshot the Pioneers 33-30 including a 20-12 margin in the second half.

Tia Daniel led the Pioneers (3-4, 1-2 SAC) with seven goals and an assist, with three goals and an assist from Kamryn McNeil. Lockwood finished with a pair of goal for Tusculum, while Lucy Brewer scored one goal in the match.

Anderson scored the first goal just over three minutes into the first quarter off the stick of Stanton, but Tusculum responded with two goals apiece from Daniel and McNeil, with the latter's second goal giving the Pioneers a 4-1 lead after one quarter.

The Trojans came back and tied the game at 4-4 on goals from Stanton, Thomas and Ontiveros, but a goal from Daniel with 8:52 left in the half sparked a three-goal Tusculum run that put the Pioneers up 7-4. Daniel capped the run with her fourth of the game on the Pioneers' final free-position shot of the match with 5:50 left in the first half, but Thomas and Grace Van Dinter scored less than a minute apart to bring the Trojans within 7-6 at halftime.

Daniel's fifth goal put Tusculum up 8-6 with 10:36 left in the third quarter, but three straight from Ontiveros, Thomas and Stanton gave Anderson its first lead since the first quarter at 9-8 with 6:04 remaining in the third. Tusculum would go back ahead 11-9 on goals from McNeil, Lockwood and Daniel, but Ontiveros scored on a free-position shot with three seconds left to cut the Pioneer lead to 11-10 heading to the fourth.

Thomas netted a free-position goal just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11-11, but Daniel converted her seventh of the night for a 12-11 Tusculum lead with 10:38 left. Lockwood appeared to give Tusculum the insurance it needed with 2:25 remaining, but Cannon scored with 1:43 left and again with 56.6 seconds to go to tie the game at 13-13. Cannon then won a draw and the Trojans set up Thomas to draw contact and earn her ninth free-position shot of the night, which she buried with 18.2 seconds left. Cannon then won the ensuing draw and Anderson ran out the clock.

Brewer had a career-high five caused turnovers for the Pioneers, one shy of the program single-game record of six set by Madison Malone against Lincoln Memorial on March 30, 2016. Brewer also had five draw controls and four ground balls for the Pioneers, while Celeste Raya had six ground balls. Chloe Michalski finished with two caused turnovers and three draw controls for the Pioneers, who caused 12 of the Trojans' 21 turnovers while committing just 13 as a team. Cannon finished with 12 draw controls for Anderson, while Katy Snyder had a team-high four ground balls.

Tusculum goalkeeper Kari Ham had seven saves in the match, while Anderson's Kora Turner had 11 stops.

The Pioneers will step out of conference play to face Missouri Western State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Griffons are 2-3 heading into a four-game Eastern swing that opens Friday at Lee, and continues with visits to Tusculum on Sunday, Shorter on Wednesday, March 22 and Alabama Huntsville on Friday, March 24.
