GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Lee University pulled away in the final 11 minutes and defeated Tusculum University 16-6 in the women's lacrosse season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The Flames (1-0) led the Pioneers (0-1) by a score of 9-6 with just under 13 minutes to play but scored the final seven goals. Lee outshot Tusculum 27-17 and forced the Pioneers into 21 turnovers.
Megan Trout led Lee with six goals on seven shots while Brittney White had four goals and an assist along with a game-high eight draw controls for the Flames.
Tia Daniel led the Pioneers with three goals, with one goal apiece from Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg, Kamryn McNeil and Jadyn Gleason. Daniel and Lucy Brewer had three draw controls apiece for Tusculum, while Brewer had four ground balls along with four caused turnovers.
Both teams scored in the opening five minutes, as a tally from Trout was answered 90 seconds later from McNeil to knot the score at 1-1. A goal from Lee's Maggie Luzier with 6:38 left in the first quarter gave the Flames a 2-1 lead they would take into the second quarter.
A free-position goal from Trout and two straight goals from White off assists from Noelle Harrington stretched the Flames' lead to 5-1 with 7:14 to go in the half. Daniel would help Tusculum cut the margin to 5-2 at halftime as she scored on a free-position attempt with 6:10 remaining.
A goal from White stretched the Lee lead to 6-2 with 8:11 left in the third quarter, but Gleason and Carolin-Vandenberg scored two minutes apart as Tusculum moved within 6-4 with 4:46 remaining in the period. The Flames would net three goals in the final three minutes, with two from Trout, as Lee carried a 9-4 lead into the final quarter.
Daniel brought the Pioneers within 9-6 as she scored twice in 1:15 to cut the Flames' advantage to 9-6 with 12:52 left, but another free-position goal from Trout sparked a 7-0 run for the Flames. Harrington, White and Caleigh Kenna also scored during the run, with Callie Curtis netting the final two goals of the game in the last four minutes.
Lee finished 5-for-11 on free-position shots in the game while Tusculum was 0-for-3 from eight meters. The Flames had 15 clears in 20 attempts and Tusculum went 9-for-16, while Lee had a 16-10 advantage in draw controls.
Kari Ham started in goal for the Pioneers in her Tusculum debut and made seven saves in nearly 53 minutes, with Emily White adding one save in the final 7:16. Caleigh Smith played all 60 minutes for Lee and had four saves in the match.
Tusculum will host Charleston (W.Va.) in a non-conference contest on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
