Newberry erases second-half deficit, defeats Pioneers 15-13

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College scored six straight goals in a six-minute span of the second half to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Tusculum University 15-13 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Wolves (4-2, 4-1 SAC) received five goals from Sophie Moore and four from Marissa Plumer, while Chloe Wood had two goals and two assists and Kendall Sewell had a goal and two assists. Newberry outscored Tusculum 10-6 in the second half after trailing the Pioneers 7-5 at halftime.

Juliette Cusano led the Pioneers (1-1, 0-1 SAC) with five goals and Tia Tuininga had three goals and an assist as Tusculum played its first game since Feb. 21 against Southern Wesleyan after completing the SAC Return to Play protocol.

Plumer scored all four of her goals in the second half, including the tying goal with 19:34 left as part of the Wolves' six-goal run. Moore scored her five goals on five shots, netting three in the first half and two more after halftime.

Kylie Marek had two goals and an assist for the Pioneers, with one goal apiece from Jessica Spiegel, Briana Minter and Natalie Dagley. Tusculum was outshot by a slim 28-27 margin but had a 16-14 edge in draw controls over the Wolves.

Newberry opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first half on a goal by Wood, but goals from Tuininga and Marek gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with 18:24 left in the half. The teams then alternated goals for the next 12 minutes, as tallies from the Wolves' Heather Johnston, and two from Moore were answered by the Pioneers' Tuininga, Dagley and Tuininga again. Cusano's first of the afternoon pushed Tusculum ahead 6-4 with 4:19 left in the half, and a goal from Moore was answered by Cusano in the closing seconds as the Pioneers led 7-5 at intermission.

Cusano gave the Pioneers their largest lead at 8-5 on a goal 1:25 into the second half, but Plumer and Moore scored 17 seconds apart to cut the Wolves' deficit to 8-7. Goals from Spiegel and Cusano were answered by Madalyn Messersmith and Moore, before Plumer tied the game at 10-10 just 20 seconds after Moore. Sewell gave Newberry its first lead since the opening minutes with 18:34 left, and goals from Plumer, Messersmith and Wood made it 14-10 Newberry with 14:06 to go. Marek brought the Pioneers within 14-11 with 13:33 remaining, but Plumer stretched the Wolves' lead to 15-11 with exactly 10 minutes to play. Goals from Minter and Cusano cut the margin to 15-13 with 1:47 left, but the Pioneers were unable to gain another possession in the offensive end.

Tuininga and Cusano led the Pioneers with five draw controls apiece, while Eliza Ryan had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Leighann Yudin also had three caused turnovers for the Pioneers, with two for Bethany Thomas.

For the Wolves, Wood had six draw controls and four caused turnovers while Plumer had four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Messersmith had a game-high eight ground balls and three caused turnovers for Newberry, with Kelly Martyn contributing four ground balls.

Both teams were 16-for-21 on clears, and Tusculum had 23 turnovers to 20 for Newberry. The Wolves had a 22-17 edge in ground balls, and each team had five free-position goals.

Kate Pipkin started in goal for the Pioneers and played just under 50 minutes, making 10 saves on 21 shots on goal by the Wolves. Taylor Floyd added one save for the Pioneers in her 10-minute stint in goal. For Newberry, Kaitlyn LaManna finished with eight saves.

The Pioneers will remain home to host UVA Wise on Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Cavaliers (2-3, 2-1 SAC) won their second straight on Saturday with an 18-6 victory over Catawba.
