Tomassoni third, Pioneers seventh after day one of SAC Championship

RESULTS

HICKORY, N.C. --- Tusculum University senior Katie Tomassoni fired a two-over par score of 74 and is tied for third place after day one of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Championship.  The Pioneers posted a team score of 316 and are in seventh place.

The three-day, 54-hole championship is being hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University at the par-72, 6,065-yard Lake Hickory Country Club.

Lenoir-Rhyne shot 300 and leads second place Wingate University by one shot (301).  Coker College is third with 310, while Anderson University and Carson-Newman University are tied for fourth at 311.  Catawba is sixth with 315, followed by Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial University (318), Newberry College (320), Queens University of Charlotte (321) and Mars Hill University (336).

Tomassoni opened her round with a double-bogey seven on the first hole and a bogey on No. 2.  The fourth-time All-SAC performer rallied and shot one-under par for the remainder of her round which included a 17-foot up-hill birdie putt on No. 6 and 15 pars including 12 in a row to wrap up her opening round.

Wingate's Diana McDonald has the first round lead with her 72 and leads by one shot over L-R's Abbey Hartsell (73).  Five players are tied for third place with 74, including Tomassoni, Ainee O'Connor (Lenoir-Rhyne), Sandra Brink (Catawba), Mind Puangcharoen (Wingate), and Megan Robb (Lenoir-Rhyne).

Tusculum senior Cydney Murrell shot 79 and is tied for 23rd place.  Freshman Julia Johansson is 36th with 81 while fellow TU freshman Olivia Cunningham is 40th with 82.  Tusculum sophomore Mackenzie Butler shot an 88 and is 52nd.

The second round of the SAC Championship will be played on Monday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. on holes No. 1 and No. 10.  Tusculum will tee off at 8:45 a.m. starting on the 10th hole and will be paired with Lincoln Memorial and Newberry.
