Herbert fourth, Pioneers sixth at Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. --- Emee Herbert fired an opening round 77 and is in fourth place at the 2013 Pinehurst Challenge, which is being held this week at the par-72, 5,840-yard National Golf Club.

The Pioneers posted a first day score of 333 and is in sixth place, 11 shots out of the lead held by UNC Pembroke (322). Host Wingate is second with 325, while Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial are tied for third place with 326. Armstrong is fifth with 332, followed by Tusculum, King (336), Pfeiffer (336), Mount Olive (340), Converse (344), Catawba (345), Limestone (346), Coker (359), Anderson (369), Otterbein (373) and Barton (394).

Herbert is three strokes behind first round leader Meridith Hawkins of Carson-Newman, who carded a two-over par 74.

Tusculum's Jillian Corum is tied for sixth place after tallying a 79 on Monday. Teammate Calley Lawson is 43rd with her 87, while Sara Howard is 51st with 90 and Alec Cunningham shot 94 and is in 75th place. TC's Kelly Horrell is tied for 56th place with 91, playing as an individual competitor.

The 16-team tournament will conclude with Tuesday's final round.
