KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Lynn's Samantha Smolen fired a three-under par 69 to pace the Fighting Knights to the day one lead at the 2013 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at Cougar Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island.

Sixth-ranked (NCAA II) Lynn posted a first round team score of 295 and lead by four shots over No. 3 Barry. Savannah College of Art & Design, the second-ranked team in NAIA, is third with 300, while No. 20 West Florida is fourth with 303. Armstrong is fifth with 306, followed by No. 15 Newberry (307), No. 5 Florida Southern (309), No. 18 UNC Pembroke (309), No. 19 Southwestern Oklahoma State (311) and Wingate to round out the top 10.

Lander is 11th with 319, followed by Columbus State (321), West Georgia (323), Lincoln Memorial (327), host Tusculum (337), Belmont Abbey (337), Coker (343) and Barton (355).

Lander's Teresa Caballer Hernani is one shot off the lead held by Smolen, with 70 (-2). Barry's Nancy Vergara is third with 72, while three players are tied for fourth with 73, highlighted by 2011 TC/Kiawah Intercollegiate champion Meghan Moore of UNC Pembroke.

Tusculum is tied for 15th place as the Pioneers were led by sophomore Emee Herbert, who shot 77 and is tied for 22nd place. Junior Sara Howard is tied for 63rd place with an 83, while rookie Calley Lawson shot an 85 and is tied for 71st place. Sophomore Alec Cunningham (92 - 85th) and senior Jillian Corum (93 - 86th) round out the scoring for the Pioneers.

The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday at the 5,800-yard, par 72 layout. Lynn is the defending champion of this event.
