Tusculum women in eighth after day one of SAC Golf Championship

CONOVER, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 658 and is in eighth place after the opening day of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship, held this week on the par 71, 5,857-yard Jackson Course at the Rock Barn Golf Club & Spa.

Tusculum was in eighth place following its opening 338, but in the afternoon, the Pioneers bounced back with 320, the best-team tally of Monday's second round.

Newberry College has the 36-hole lead with 634, while Wingate University is five shots behind with 314-325=639. Lincoln Memorial University held the first round lead with 308, but fired a second round 333 and is in third place with 641. Carson-Newman College is fourth with 643, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne University (647), Anderson University (655), Catawba College (657), Tusculum, Mars Hill College (721) and Brevard College (899).

Tusculum sophomore Jillian Corum is tied for sixth place at 158 following rounds of 83 and 75.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Brenna Martens has the lead after Monday's play with 72-78=150. Wingate's Ashley Denton and Julia Daneshfar of Newberry are tied for second place with 153, three shots behind Martens. Eileen Purpur (Catawba) and Maria Stapleton (LMU) are tied for fourth with 154, while Corum and Jessica Tarbet (Carson-Newman) both shot 158 and are tied for sixth place.

Sophomore Haley Rye was TC's most consistent player of the day with rounds of 83 and 82 for 165 and is tied for 24th place. Senior Emily Palenkas opened with an 88, but improved that tally by eight shots with an 80 and is tied for 30th with 168. Junior Aly Pugh is one shot behind Palenkas with 86-83=169 and is 34th. Freshman Sara Howard is tied for 35th place following rounds of 86 and 84 for 170, while senior Adriana Vizcarrondo, playing as an individual competitor, is 41st with 88-89=177.

The final round of the SAC Championship will be held on Tuesday.
