Florida Southern rallies to win Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Florida Southern rallied from nine strokes back to win the 2011 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate by one shot Sunday at Cougar Point Golf Club. The Mocs, the second-ranked team in NCAA Division II posted the lowest team score in the final round with 300 to finish with a two-day total of 605, edging runner-up Rollins (No. 17 in NCAA II) by a stroke (296-310=606).

The Florida Southern duo of Emily Flanigan and Melanie Audette paced the final round rally as each carded 73. Flanigan and Audette also finished tied for first place with UNC Pembroke's Megan Moore at 147. Moore captured medalist honors on a scorecard playoff as she posted a two-day 75-72=147.

Rollins' Joanne Coe and Brianna Seo also earned spots on the All-Tournament Team as they tied for fourth place at 148. Columbus State's Kimesha Anthony also finished with 148, but Coe and Seo won the tie-break on a scorecard playoff.

Belmont Abbey finished third with 617, followed by No. 15 UNC Pembroke (617), No. 16 Barry (619), No. 11 Savannah College of Art & Design (630), Armstrong Atlantic State (631), Lynn (640), Lincoln Memorial (649), Columbus State (651) and Mount Olive (651) to round out the top 10. Anderson finished 12th with 668, while tournament host Tusculum made the biggest improvement of the field posting a final round 324 to shave 21 shots off its opening round to shoot 669 and finish 13th. Wingate was 14th with 676, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (679), Queens University of Charlotte (680) and Coker (762).

Florida Southern, who is the only multi-time winner in the nine-year history of this event, records its third Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate title (2008, 2009, 2011).

Senior Emily Palenkas led Tusculum this weekend with 79-80=159 to finished 30th, while freshman Sara Howard placed 54th with 87-83=170. Junior Katie Doane finished tied for 62nd with 84-91=175, while sophomore Haley Rye improved 10 shots from Saturday with 95-85=180 to finish 69th. Individual competitors Aly Pugh (92-93=195) and Adriana Vizcarrondo (95-95=190) finished 75th and 82nd, respectively. Tusculum sophomore Jillian Corum accounted for the best round of the team on Sunday with a final round 76.

Tusculum returns to the Palmetto State, Feb. 14-15 to compete at the Newberry Invitational in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
