GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's basketball team welcomes three international recruits and three transfers to the roster for the 2024-25 season, head coach Roger Hodge announced.
Freshman guards Ema Nagyova, Zoe Sharpe and Angela Gomez are joined by forwards Abbi Douglas, Jalyn Spurlin and Danyell Booker as Hodge assembled a 17-player roster that will tip off the 2023-24 season November 9 against Lees-McRae.
This group of six players joins previously announced freshmen Jenna Sparks and Josie Horner, along with nine program returnees from the 2023-24 campaign.
Ema Nagyova
Freshman - Guard - 5-7
Ziar nad Hronom, Slovakia (Webb School)
Nagyova played high school basketball at The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee where she helped the team to the state semifinals in 2024. Nagyova also played club basketball in Slovakia prior to coming to the United States.
Hodge: "I am so excited about Ema Nagyova coming to Tusculum! She fits everything we look for as a player and person. Ema is athletic, smart, and skilled. She is also an outstanding student and a wonderful person to be around. Ema will bring a toughness that will be a great example for our entire team. Pioneer fans are really going to enjoy watching her in the orange and black as a Pioneer!"
Brody Curry (Webb School coach): "Ema is an incredibly tough competitor that only cares about winning. Whether it's guarding the other team's best player, facilitating or scoring the ball, she just wants to win. They don't make many that are as tough as her. She will be a great addition to the Pioneer Family."
Zoe Sharpe
Freshman - Guard - 5-7
Glasgow, Scotland (Hillpark Secondary School)
Sharpe played club basketball for the Caledonia Gladiators, and she was a member of both the Scotland and Great Britain U16 and U18 teams. Across three seasons for the Great Britain teams, Sharpe averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Hodge: "Zoe Sharpe was a target of our recruiting efforts early on in the process. She plays with such a passion and energy! Zoe immediately stands out when you watch her play because of her intensity and versatility. She has a great deal of experience playing at a high level. Zoe is a worker -- always in the gym and wanting to do extra work. As her game continues to grow, so will her impact on our program."
Krumesh Patel (Great Britain National Team Coach): "Zoe was a pleasure to coach over the summer with National Team! She plays with just great heart and energy. She's developing really nice into a solid point guard! The future is bright if she keeps building on the confidence from the summer with GB. She has shown great ability in pushing the tempo and playing great defence. Look forward to see her keep growing!"
Angela Gomez
Freshman - Guard - 5-6
Rincon de la Victoria, Spain (IES Margarita Salas)
Gomez played for several international teams while in Spain, including the Unicaja Baloncesto club team. She is described as one of the top 10 players in the country, and is a scoring point guard who controls the tempo and has incredible athleticism.
Hodge: "Angela is another high-energy, athletic player. She has tremendous instinct for the game. Angela loves to defend and impacts the game on both ends of the floor. I always like players with a full skill set, and Angela has that. She can shoot the 3, is very good from mid-range, gets to the rim, and is a great passer."
Abbi Douglas
Grad student - Forward/Guard - 5-9
Ashland City, Tenn. (Cheatham County HS/Univ. of the Cumberlands)
Douglas played three seasons at Cumberlands and averaged 9.9 points and 3.7 rebounds in 81 games, scoring 805 points. Douglas was honorable mention All-Conference in 2021-22 as she averaged 12.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. In high school, Douglas was the MVP of the 2019 TSSAA Class AA Tournament after leading Cheatham County to the state title.
Hodge: "I have watched Abbi Douglas several times as a spectator and always came away impressed. Abbi has the ability to shoot from distance and attack the goal. She is also one of the better rebounding guards you will see. Her length and athleticism also allow her to defend multiple positions effectively. Abbi is a person of strong faith and high character. Combine that with her being an outstanding student, and she is a perfect fit."
Jalyn Spurlin
Senior - Guard/Forward - 5-8
Tampa, Fla. (Armwood HS/Anderson University)
Spurlin is no stranger to the South Atlantic Conference, playing three seasons at Anderson (2020-23). She averaged 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, scoring 748 points in 93 career games. Spurlin was a member of the SAC All-Tournament team in 2023, after averaging 11.9 points per game during the season.
Hodge: "Jalyn's athleticism and competitiveness is something our program definitively needed. There is no one that will play harder than she will! Jalyn is one of those kids that can affect the game with her intensity alone. I have no doubt she will be one of the best defenders and guard rebounders in our league. Jalyn works extremely hard and is driven to win. We could not be happier that she is part of our program."
Danyell Booker
Senior - Forward - 5-6
Fresno, Calif. (Roosevelt HS/Cal State Dominguez Hills)
Booker played the last three seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where she scored in double figures 19 times in 59 games. Booker helped her squad to the 2023 NCAA Division II Elite Eight, averaging 8.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
Hodge: "We were very fortunate to have come across Danyell Booker late in the recruiting cycle. She is another outstanding competitor in this class. I believe Danyell will be one of the stronger players in our league. She is a unique player in that she has the ability to guard all 5 positions. I am very impressed with Danyell's abilities on offense as well. She is a player that will be very difficult to match up with given her ability to attack the rim and score from the perimeter."
