
Taylor May and Antionette McPhail combined for 42 points to help
Catawba College defeat Tusculum College 65-56 Saturday afternoon in
a South Atlantic Conference Women's basketball game at Goodman
Gym.
May scored a game-high 22 points and McPhail added 20, while Chloe
Bully chipped in with 14 points and seven assists for the Indians
(7-5, 3-1 SAC), who snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Pioneers
(8-4, 2-2 SAC) dating to the 2006-07 season.
Ashley Thurman posted a double-double with 10 points and a
career-high 10 rebounds for the Pioneers, who attempted 16 more
shots than the Indians but shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) from the
field. Tusculum also attempted just six free throws compared to 21
by Catawba.
There were 13 ties and 14 lead changes in the game, including 10
lead changes in the second half alone. Neither team led by more
than five points until the Indians made seven free throws in the
final minute to set the final margin.
Tusculum took its final lead of the game at 50-49 on a free throw
by Jama Hammontree with 6:25 remaining, before May gave Catawba the
lead for good on a layup with 4:44 to play. Bully followed with a
three-pointer with 4:20 left to extend the Indians' lead to 54-50,
and the Pioneers would not be within one possession the rest of the
game.
Both teams led by five points in the first half, with Tusculum
holding its largest lead of the game at 13-8 on a layup by April
McCann with 4 1/2 minutes gone. Catawba came back to tie the game
at 13-13 as May hit a layup and Bully drilled a three-pointer. The
teams then exchanged baskets for the next ten minutes, with ties
all the way to 25-25 before a three-point play by McPhail gave
Catawba a 30-25 lead with 2:34 left in the half.
The Indians went to the locker room with a 34-29 lead behind 13
points from McPhail and eight from May. The Pioneers, who shot 42.4
percent (14-for-33) from the field in the first half, were paced by
eight points from Thurman and seven from Hammontree.
Catawba held onto a slim lead for the first six minutes of the
second half before Tusculum regained the lead at 37-36 on a basket
by Breaira Barksdale with 13:31 to go. The teams then exchanged the
lead back and forth for the next nine minutes, with neither team
leading by more than two points, until Bully's late three-pointer
gave the Indians breathing room.
For the game, Catawba shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the field
and went 15-for-21 at the free-throw line. Tusculum ended the game
at 37.3 precent (25-for-67) and made just two of its six foul
shots, all coming in the second half.
May shot 9-for-12 from the field for the Indians and sank 4-for-5
from the foul line. McPhail was 7-for-13 from the field and
connected on all five of her free-throw attempts. Bully was just
5-for-12 shooting, but three of her buckets were from three-point
range.
Hammontree led the Pioneers with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting,
including a pair of three-pointers, while Thurman was 5-for-10 from
the field en route to her first career double-double. Barksdale had
eight points and three steals and matched Bully for the game high
with seven assists.
The Tusculum bench enjoyed a 21-4 scoring edge over Catawba, led by
nine points from Alishia Mosley and eight points from Nequoiah
Anderson. Quaneasia Coleman was the lone bench player for the
Indians to score, finishing the game with four points and six
rebounds in 26 minutes.
The Pioneers will open a three-game home stand on Wednesday evening
at 6 p.m. against Anderson at Pioneer Arena.
