BULLDOGS BEAT TUSCULUM WOMEN 93-71

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Senior forward Emily Paffrath led five Wingate scorers in double figures with 16 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 93-71 home win over Tusculum College Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.

Wingate senior guard Tanetra Barrett barely missed a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Sophomore guard Anna Atkinson added 14 points, while junior guard Kate Edwards had 12 markers and senior forward Kerri Metzker chipped in 11 points for Wingate.

The Bulldogs, who made 6-of-10 three-pointers, raced to a 43-28 halftime lead and were never threatened. Behind 11 rebounds from Barrett and eight boards from Metzker, Wingate outrebounded Tusculum 50-29.

Sophomore guard Ashli Oliver scored 24 points and sophomore guard Shantae Shank added 13 points for Tusculum. The Pioneers converted only 6-for-27 from three-point land.

The Pioneers hung with the Bulldogs in the opening six minutes, but a 25-9 run, capped by a lay-up by freshman center Stacie Rhodes, put Wingate up 35-19 with 4:45 left in the first half. A three-pointer by Oliver â€" Tusculum’s only trey on 14 attempts in the first half â€" stemmed the tide and cut the lead to 35-24, but the Pioneers would get no closer.

Tusculum was still within 56-41 with 12:43 left in the game. Barrett took charge, feeding Paffrath for a lay-up and Edwards for a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions.

The Pioneers return home on Monday to host arch-rival Carson-Newman College, beginning at 6 p.m.
