Stephens takes gold in triple jump at SAC Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women finished fifth and the men placed ninth at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, which concluded Sunday at the JDL Fast Track.

The Pioneers had one gold medal performance during the weekend, as senior Joshua Stephens won the men's triple jump on Sunday. The Tusculum women had three runner-up showings and a total of five medalists in Sunday's finals.

MEN'S RECAP
Stephens, the top seed in the triple jump, went to the top of the leader board on his second attempt, and posted his winning jump of 14.78 meters (48 feet, 6 inches) on his third attempt to earn his first career conference medal.

Junior Isaiah Olson finished third in the 200 meters (22.02 seconds) and took fourth in the 60 meters (6.80 seconds), while junior Adrian Gumm finished fourth in the shot put at 15.75 meters (51 feet, 8 1/4 inches).

The 4x400 relay of grad student Dorian Craven, freshman Mica Ruffin, sophomore Kayvon Pickett and senior Xay Bogus finished ninth at 3:28.68.

Wingate won the team championship with 191 points, with Lenoir-Rhyne (100 points), Carson-Newman (77 points), Anderson (73 points) and Catawba (60 points) in the top five. Tusculum had 26 points for its ninth-place result, one point behind eighth-place Emory & Henry.

WOMEN'S RECAP
The Pioneers had 10 individual scoring performances on Sunday, led by junior Theresa Green-White who finished fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.84 seconds), fifth in the 200 meters in a season-best 25.28 seconds, and sixth in the 60 meters (7.74 seconds).

Junior Jahzara Hart placed second in the 60 meters (7.55 seconds) and third in the 200 meters (24.61 seconds), with junior Shanice Cox taking second in the 200 meters (24.60 seconds) and fifth in the 60 meters (7.68 seconds). Freshman Kori Moore placed second in the 60 hurdles with a season-best time of 8.62 seconds, freshman Qitarah Castlin was eighth in the 200 meters (25.76 seconds) and grad student Tashianna Gray was eighth in the 400 meters (58.36 seconds).

The 4x400 relay of Moore, Gray, sophomore McKenzie Morton and Cox finished third with a time of 3:59.16.

Also competing for the Pioneers on Sunday were junior Jesica Mbhamali, who was 22nd in the 3000 meters at 10:46.66, the fifth-best time in program history, while senior Amber Hogan placed 20th in the shot put with a throw of 9.57 meters (31 feet, 4 3/4 inches).

Wingate won the team title with 172.5 points, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at 125 points in second. Lincoln Memorial (61 points), Catawba (59 points) and Tusculum (58 points) rounded out the top five.
