Tusculum men earn third meet win of season at Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's track and field team earned its third meet victory of the season by capturing first place at the Catamount Classic at Western Carolina University on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers had four wins and 18 scoring performances across 10 events on Saturday to end the two-day meet with 147 points, just ahead of the host Catamounts who were second with 140 points.

Tusculum's women finished sixth overall out of 12 scoring teams at the meet, with one victory and eight scoring performances on Saturday.

The Pioneers will begin preparation for the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held May 1-2 at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

MEN'S RECAP
Sophomore Isaiah Olson won the 100 meters with a time of 10.68 seconds, with senior Jordan Taylor in second at 10.72 seconds, senior Marquel Pittman taking fourth in 10.79 seconds and freshman Lansford Cunningham in sixth at 10.88 seconds. Senior Dorian Craven took first in the 400 meters in 49.56 seconds, with junior Xay Bogus in seventh at 51.79 seconds. Tusculum's 4x100 relay of Taylor, Olson, Cunningham and Pittman was first in 40.68 seconds.

In hurdles, sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. was first in the 400 hurdles at 54.58 seconds with senior Jamal Cash in fifth at 55.36 seconds. Cash was third in the 110 hurdles at 14.87 seconds, his career best and the second-best time in program history, with freshman Hunter Burkey placing fifth at 16.40 seconds.

Grad student Antonio Aparicio finished fourth in the 800 meters and tied his own school record of 1:52.78 that he set at last year's Catamount Classic. Freshman Pau Valdepenas ran 1:58.29 and freshman Sam Shipp was timed at 1:59.27 to move into fifth and sixth place, respectively, on the program performance list in the 800.

In field events, freshman Dylan Horne placed fourth in the discus and set a school record at 47.95 meters (157 feet, 3 inches), breaking the record of 43.75 meters set by sophomore Adrian Gumm at the Blue Bear Invite on March 30. Gumm was fourth in the shot put at 15.38 meters (50 feet, 5 1/2 inches), the second-best mark in program history.

Smith claimed second place in the triple jump at 14.50 meters (47 feet, 7 inches) and junior Joshua Stephens was fourth at 13.79 meters (45 feet, 3 inches). Burkey took seventh in the high jump with a season-best leap of 1.83 meters (6 feet, 0 inches).

Tusculum and Western Carolina were the only two teams to break 100 points at the meet, with Newberry taking third place at 86 points, ETSU in fourth at 77 points and Wofford fifth with 77 points among the 12 teams that scored.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Sophomore Theresa Green-White broke her own school record in the 100 hurdles with a first-place finish in 13.92 seconds, breaking her mark of 14.00 seconds set at the John-Hunter Classic on March 16.

Sophomore Kiera Taylor was second in the 100 meters at 12.14 seconds, with Green-White in seventh at 12.24 seconds. In the 400 meters, junior Jada Martin placed sixth at 59.30 seconds and freshman McKenzie Morton took seventh at 59.55 seconds. Freshman Macey Snapp finished eighth in the 400 hurdles at 1:11.83.

In relays, the 4x100 of Taylor, freshman Alonda Shelton, Green-White and freshman Kieley Smith was second in 47.04 seconds, and the 4x400 relay of Taylor, Shelton, Morton and Martin was sixth at 4:04.20.

Western Carolina won the meet with 130.5 points, outpointing runner-up ETSU (127.5) and third-place Tennessee Tech (122). Wofford took fourth place at 102 points, followed by Gardner-Webb at 93 points and the Pioneers as the top Division II finisher with 62 points.
