BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. --- Several members of the Tusculum University men's and women's track and field teams competed on the first day of the Montreat Open on Friday.
The Pioneers will return for the second day of action on Saturday, March 23 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Pulliam Stadium.
MEN'S RECAP
Freshman Pau Valdepenas finished fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:00.42, the fourth-fastest mark in program history. Grad student Antonio Aparicio had the ninth-fastest time in school history and finished 11th overall at 4:02.46, with freshman Sam Shipp taking 12th place in 4:02.54 with the 10th-best time in program history.
In the long jump, sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. had a career-best jump of 6.61 meters (21 feet, 8 1/4 inches) and took fifth place, while sophomore Adrian Gumm was ninth in the shot put at 13.85 meters (45 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Gumm threw 41.14 meters (134 feet, 11 inches) in the discus for the second-best mark in program history behind his record throw of 42.19 meters set last week at the John-Hunter Classic.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The Pioneers had four competitors in women's events on Friday, with sophomore Inmaculada Delgado the top finisher as she took 17th in the 1500 meters at 5:01.39. Junior Amber Hogan was Tusculum's top field athlete with a throw of 28.37 meters (93 feet, 1 inch) in the discus.
