Six wins, two school records for Pioneers on final day at VMI Winter Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Tusculum University earned six victories on the final day of the VMI Winter Relays at the Corps Physical Training Center on Saturday.

The Pioneers also set a pair of school records, as sophomore Adrian Gumm broke his own mark in the men's shot put and freshman Alonda Shelton set a new Tusculum mark in the women's 200 meters.

In addition to Gumm, the Pioneers received individual wins from senior Marquel Pittman in the men's 60, grad student Zack Nelson in the men's 400, and freshman Pau Valdepenas in the men's 3000, along with freshman A'jaylah Yates in the women's 60 and the men's 4x400 relay.

Tusculum will begin preparation for the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held Feb. 24-25 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Pittman ran 6.87 seconds to win the 60 meters, with senior Tyrell Edwards taking third place at 6.92 seconds and sophomore Isaiah Olson in fourth at 6.96 seconds. Freshman Lansford Cunningham placed eighth at 7.07 seconds.

In the 400, Nelson had a winning time of 49.18 seconds, with senior Dorian Craven in third at 49.31 seconds and junior Stephen Brewer in fifth at 49.86 seconds. Valdepenas ran 8:51.66 in the 3000 meters to capture first place, and was third in the mile at 4:20.51 for the second-best time in program history in the event.

Pittman finished fourth in the 200 meters at 22.34 seconds, with Edwards fifth at 22.36 seconds and Olson in sixth with a time of 22.38 seconds. Senior Jamal Cash took sixth place in the 60 hurdles finals at 8.65 seconds.

Gumm threw 14.89 meters (48 feet, 10 1/4 inches) in his first throw of the shot put finals to break his own school record of 14.54 meters (47 feet, 8 1/2 inches) set last year at Vanderbilt. Sophomore Gavin Rowell also passed Gumm's old record on his final throw of the competition, taking second place in the standings and in program history with a heave of 14.56 meters (47 feet, 9 1/4 inches).

The 4x400 relay of Craven, Cunningham, Nelson and Brewer posted the fifth-fastest time in program history in taking first place at 3:18.09. The quartet of sophomore Daryl Smith Jr., Pittman, grad student Antonio Aparicio and junior Xay Bogus was second at 3:32.58, with the C relay of Cash, junior Landen Locklear, freshman Kayvon Pickett and junior Benit Kitapindu in fifth place at 3:34.03.

Smith took second place in the triple jump at 13.91 meters (45 feet, 7 3/4 inches) with junior Joshua Stephens in fourth place at 13.56 meters (44 feet, 6 inches).

WOMEN'S RECAP
Shelton ran 25.18 in the 200 meters to take second place overall and break the one-week-old program record of 25.28 seconds set by A'jaylah Yates at the VMI Invitational.

Yates won the 60 meters in 7.63 seconds, just .01 off her program record set last weekend at VMI, with sophomore Kiera Taylor in fourth at 7.71, Shelton in fifth place at 7.76 seconds and sophomore Theresa Green-White in sixth at 7.82 seconds.

Green-White placed third in the 60 hurdles at 8.87 seconds, the second-best time of the season and her career.

Sophomore Inmaculada Delgado finished eighth in the 3000 meters at 11:07.37 and took 11th place in the mile at 5:41.34. In the 400 meters, junior Jada Martin was 11th at 1:02.63, followed by freshman Caley Sosnowski in 13th place at 1:03.50 and senior Judy Chellah in 14th at 1:04.03.

Tusculum's 4x400 relay of Martin, Shelton, Yates and Taylor ran 4:00.53 to take third place with the eighth-fastest time in program history.
