Edwards breaks 100 meters record at LR Bears Invitational

HICKORY, N.C. --- Junior Tyrell Edwards set the Tusculum University school record in the men's 100 meters as the Pioneer track and field teams competed at the LR Bears Invitational Friday afternoon.

The women's 4x100 relay of freshman Kiera Taylor, graduate student Kylia Wright, freshman Theresa Green-White and sophomore Silvia Bah broke the school record with a winning time of 47.06 seconds as the Pioneers had three men's and two women's victories during the non-scoring meet.

The Pioneers will return to the track April 28-29 at the Appalachian State Open in Boone, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Edwards was the top qualifier in the 100 meters with a time of 10.45 seconds, then ran 10.29 seconds in the finals to break the one-week-old record of 10.30 seconds set last Saturday by Jordan Taylor at the Catamount Classic. Edwards was second in the 100 finals, with freshman Isaiah Olson in fifth at 10.55 seconds, senior Marquel Pittman in sixth at 10.58 seconds and senior Jarvis Barber Jr. taking eighth in 10.79 seconds.

Senior Antonio Aparicio won the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.59, while the 4x100 relay of Taylor, Barber, Pittman and Edwards just missed the program record but won the event with a time of 40.21 seconds. The Pioneer B relay of senior Devan Hart, Olson, freshman Daryl Smith Jr. and sophomore Stephen Brewer took second at 41.85 seconds.

Tusculum's 4x400 relay of junior Dorian Craven, senior Zackary Nelson, Barber and Brewer took first place at 3:15.29, the fourth-best time in program history in the event and second-best this season.

In the 200 meters, Pittman was fifth with a career-best time of 21.47 seconds, with Hart in sixth at 21.85 seconds. Nelson finished second in the 400 meters at 47.93 seconds, followed by Craven in fourth at 48.56 seconds for his season best in the event.

In hurdles, junior Jamal Cash took third place in the 110 hurdles with a season-best time of 15.01 seconds, while Smith was fifth in the 400 hurdles at 55.66 seconds and Cash took 10th at 57.88 seconds.

The Pioneers competed in five field events on Friday, with sophomore Joshua Stephens posting the sixth-best mark in program history in the long jump at 6.56 meters (21 feet, 6 1/4 inches) for a sixth-place finish. Smith posted the eighth-best triple jump in school history with a leap of 14.17 meters (46 feet, 5 3/4 inches) and placed third, with Stephens taking seventh at 13.23 meters (43 feet 4 3/4 inches).

In throws, freshman Adrian Gumm was fifth in the shot put at 13.48 meters (44 feet, 2 3/4 inches), freshman Gavin Rowell took eighth in the discus at 39.01 meters (128 feet) and freshman Mikeal Pillar had a ninth-place showing in the javelin at 38.91 meters (127 feet, 8 inches), sixth-best in school history.

WOMEN'S RECAP
The 4x100 relay beat the record of 47.81 seconds set March 25 at the Montreat College Open, a group that included Wright, Taylor and Green-White.

Junior Emily Coddington won the 1500 meters in 4:53.89, with freshman Inmaculada Delgado placing third at 5:06.33.

In the 100 meters, Taylor took second place at 12.09 seconds, with Wright posting a season-best time of 12.19 seconds for fifth place. Wright was eighth in the 200 meters at 25.68 seconds, with senior Destiny Lottie in eighth place in the 400 meters at 1:02.27.

Green-White competed in both hurdles events, taking fifth in the 100 hurdles at 14.81 seconds and 11th in the 400 hurdles in a season-best 1:11.05.

Bah moved into eighth place on the Tusculum performance list in both the 100 meters (12.58 seconds) and the 200 meters (26.02 seconds).
