Pioneer men qualify for NCAA Championship in two events

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's track & field team will participate in two events at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held May 26-28 in Allendale, Michigan at the Grand Valley State University Track & Field Stadium.

Junior Zackary Nelson qualified in the 400 meters, along with the 4x100-meter relay team of senior Gerard Hearst and juniors Devan Hart, Jarvis Barber Jr. and Marquel Pittman. Both competitions will hold preliminaries on Thursday, May 26 and finals on Saturday, May 28.

Tusculum's 4x100 relay earned one of 13 berths in the championship field by running a school-record 40.45 seconds in the South Atlantic Conference Championship on May 5. The Pioneers are one of four SAC schools in the 4x100 field, joining Carson-Newman, Limestone and Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Pioneers competed in the 4x100 at the 2018 NCAA Championship, finishing 11th overall with a time of 40.56 seconds. All four Pioneers in this year's relay will be competing at NCAA nationals for the first time in their careers.

Nelson is among 19 runners competing in the 400 meters at nationals. The St. John's, Florida native also qualified in the 400 meters at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship, where he finished 15th in preliminaries at 48.33 seconds. Nelson qualified for the outdoor championship with his third-place time of 47.14 seconds at the SAC Championship on May 6.

The preliminaries for the 4x100 relay will be held Thursday, May 26 at 4:50 p.m., followed by heats in the 400 meters at 5:40 p.m. The final in the 4x100 relay is Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. with the 400 finals at 3:05 p.m.
