Records neared in Tusculum's sweep of Catawba

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Mya Maddox, Hayley Lazo, and Anna Alloway have records in their sights after Tusculum University softball's rout of Catawba on Wednesday (Mar. 23). TU racked up 18 runs to Catawba's two across the doubleheader.

Maddox tied the program's stolen base record with four (second-most in Division II this season) and is in contention for the season and career marks as well. Lazo was hit by three pitches in the twin-bill, upping her season total to 10 and career to 15, tying her for second and third respectively. Alloway is within reach of 10 career records: games played, games started, at bats, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, total bases, on-base percentage, and sacrifice flies.

Tusculum (18-13, 5-5 SAC) finishes up March on the road in South Carolina, starting at Coker on Saturday the 26th at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Tusculum 11, Catawba 1 (5 innings)
Alloway drove in four runs and Maddox stole four bases in the five-inning run-rule of the Indians at Red Edmonds Field as TU scored in every inning. Emily Sappington was solid in the circle to hold Catawba to only two hits.

The Pioneers used three hits and two errors to their advantage in the opening frame, scoring four runs. Maddox drew a lead-off walk and stole second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a throwing error by the catcher. Lazo singled to left center, followed by Chloe Freischmidt reaching on a fielder's choice. Lazo was safe at second on the Indians' second throwing error. Alloway hit a shot back up the middle to score the lead runner Lazo and move Freischmidt up to second. Madison McGinnis flexed to run for Alloway as Sappington stepped into the box. She singled to center to score her batterymate Freischmidt. Hannah Hughes grounded out to third, but McGinnis was able to touch home.

Catawba's lone run came on a solo home run in the top of the second.

Maddox led off the second inning with another walk, followed by a steal. Kallyn Newport ran out an infield single and both she and Maddox pulled off a double-steal. Lazo was plunked to load the bases with no out. Freischmidt was also hit by a pitch to advance her teammates 60 feet. Alloway cleared the base path with a three-run double, raising the advantage to 8-1 Pioneers.

Lazo was hit by a pitch for the second-straight inning and a Freischmidt double sent her home for the ninth TU run.

The Pioneers tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to insure the run-rule margin. Claire Smeltzer doubled and Angela Masiello entered to pinch run. Hodges launched her own double to switch places with Masiello. A Maddox single, aided by an outfield error, allowed Hodges to score.

Sappington (8-7) allowed just two hits across her 70 pitches, retiring 15-of-18 batters faced. She struck out five and did not relent a walk in her 14th complete game of the season.

Game 2: Tusculum 7, Catawba 1
Kiley Longmire was the lone Pioneer to record multiple hits in the nightcap, while Freischmidt (3), and Alloway (2) continued to drive in runs. TU also stole a season-best six bases, tied for the third-most in program history.

The Pioneers threatened in the first inning, while the Indians used back-to-back hits in the second to take their first lead of the day.

Tusculum was able to pull ahead after a four-run third frame. Longmire led-off with a single to left, followed by Maddox, who drew a walk. Lazo was hit for the third time in the series to load the bases with one out. Freischmidt drove in all three runs with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hodges reached on a fielding error, which allowed Freischmidt to score unearned.

The home team extended its lead during the next inning. Longmire notched another single and Makayla Bush pinch ran. She advanced on a wild pitch and went to third on Maddox's bunt single. Maddox stole second to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Bush attempted to score on Newport's fielder's choice, but was thrown out at the plate. Newport stole second and Maddox scored on Lazo's bloop single to left.

TU added on in its final inning. Newport and Freischmidt both walked to bring up Alloway with two outs. She belted a double off of the right center fence to add more cushion to the Pioneer lead.

Ireland Cavanaugh (8-4) pitched all seven innings on only 81 pitches. She surrendered six hits, one run, and one walk, while striking out three.
