Members of the Tusculum College softball team appear in the
latest NCAA Division II statistical rankings, through games of
Sunday, March 24.
Junior pitcher Kelly King ranks eighth with five shutouts, 28th in
earned run average at 1.45 and 38th with 10 victories, sophomore
Alix Kruel is 13th with 0.37 sacrifice hits per game, and senior
Lindsey Umberger and junior Katie Brennan are tied for 35th in
triples with three.
As a team, the Pioneers are 11th in triples per game at 0.47 and
30th in stolen bases per game at 1.87, averages that lead the South
Atlantic Conference. Tusculum entered the week in first place in
the SAC with a 7-1 league record, one game ahead of 2012 conference
tournament finalists Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson.
King ranks among the SAC leaders in a number of pitching
categories, including second in ERA and fourth in shutouts. She has
a 10-4 record with nine complete games in 12 starts, and has
allowed a total of 74 hits in 93 1/3 innings pitched. King threw a
no-hitter against Limestone on Feb. 14 and tossed a one-hitter in a
2-0 victory over Brevard this past Saturday.
Kruel leads the Pioneers and ranks fourth in the conference in
sacrifices per game, having laid down 11 successful bunts in 31
games. Meanwhile, Umberger and Brennan are among several players
tied for fourth in the SAC in total triples.
Tusculum has stolen 57 bases in 59 attempts through 31 games to
lead the conference in steals per game. The Pioneers have a success
rate of 96.6 percent, with one of their two caught stealings coming
on a failed squeeze bunt. The Pioneers have also belted 14 triples
to lead the conference and stand just outside the top 10
nationally.
The Pioneers will be on the road Wednesday at Carson-Newman in a
doubleheader rescheduled from Tuesday due to wet grounds. First
pitch will be 2 p.m.
