Barton gets revenge on Tusculum despite career outings

WILSON, N.C. --- Barton College avenged its early season loss to Tusculum University men's volleyball in a five-set thriller on Friday night (Apr. 7). A new program record was set, alongside four top-five figures.

Colby Landry reset the program record for kills in a match with 26. Taylor West was credited with 14 digs, tied for second-most individually. Jake Whyte finished with six service aces, third-most all-time, while Jaden Bramhall dished out 50 assists, good for fourth. As a team, the Pioneers notched 15 aces, the most since April 8, 2022 against Edward Waters.

The Bulldogs (5-17) survived the late surge by the Pioneers (9-16) by scores of 26-24, 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Both Jack Sandahl and Benjamin Wiechert tallied double-digit kills for Barton with 15 and 12, respectively. Seth Deppe (22) and Moses Kresch (19) recorded double-figures in assists. Thomas Fanic (2) and Cooper Edwards (1) landed the trio of Bulldog service aces. Fanic also led the way in the blocks category as he was credited with seven total (one solo, six assists). Deppe added five block assists.

In addition to Landry's best, Dane Loup tied his career-high with 16 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Rounding out the scoring were Jakob Svendsen (7), Whyte (6), Jabes de la Cruz (5), and Bramhall (3). Adding Whyte's ace total, Bramhall finished with a collegiate-high four aces. Landry (2), Loup (2), and Svendsen (1) completed the serving category. Both Whyte and Bramhall were credited with four total blocks (two solo, two assists). Joining West in double-digit digs was Loup with 10.

Barton hit .246 as a team with 50 kills and 20 errors on 122 total attempts. Tusculum averaged .241 with 63 kills, 28 errors, and 145 total attacks. The Pioneers led the match in service aces (15-3) and assists (56-45), while the Bulldogs held the advantage in digs (45-40) and total blocks (11-7).

Tusculum wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Apr. 7) at Mount Olive. The match between the Pioneers and Trojans is scheduled for 2 p.m.
