Tusculum breaks ace record in thriller at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. --- The Tusculum University men's volleyball team landed a program-record 13 service aces in a five-set loss to Limestone on Sunday (Mar. 27), aided by a career-best five from Colby Landry.

The Saints (16-7, 5-3 IVA) won by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 12-25, 15-12 to survive the Pioneers (5-17, 1-5 IVA).

Geraldo Rivera knocked down a match-high 17 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, followed by 15 from James Chretien (.310) and 12 by Veit Bils (.500). Paul Stommel registered 47 assists, while Rivera, Sean Boyle, and Bils were responsible for the three Saint aces. Matt Anetrella racked up 18 digs, ahead of 11 by setter Stommel. Jarrett Malone recorded five total blocks (one solo, four assists) to lead the contest.

Jake Whyte led the TU offense with 11 kills, just ahead of Landry (10), Deklan Wingo (10), and Dane Loup (9). Shaphar Grant and Shaun Kampshoff tallied four and two, respectively. Grant hit .400, Landry .381, and Wingo averaged .412. Kampshoff dished out 37 assists. Aside from Landry's five, four other Pioneers recorded at least one ace to up the record: Wingo (3), Loup (2), Kampshoff (2), and Grant (1). Taylor West scooped up a team-best eight digs, two more than Loup and Kampshoff. Both Loup and Grant were credited with three block assists at the net. Wingo, Whyte, and Kampshoff each finished with two total blocks.

Limestone ended the match with a .316 hitting percentage with 56 kills and 20 attack errors on 114 total attempts. Tusculum totaled 46 kills, 23 errors, and 123 swings for a .187 hitting percentage. The Saints held the advantage in assists (54-45), digs (47-32), and total blocks (7.5-6.5), while the Pioneers won the service battle 13-3.

Tusculum closes out March at King on the 31st, with a first serve time of 7 p.m.
