Men's Volleyball battles top-10 Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The Tusculum University men's volleyball team competed against No. 9 Grand Canyon on Friday (Mar. 18) night in GCU Arena.

The top-10 Lopes (12-8) won by scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 to sweep the Pioneers (5-13).

Karter Rogers led the home team with nine kills on a .467 hitting percentage, just ahead of Christian Janke (7) and Jacob Guerber (6), both of whom hit .500. Heath Hughes dished out 29 assists, while he and Janke both landed a pair of service aces. Janke tallied a match-best eight digs, two ahead of Hughes. Colin Lovejoy is credited with three total blocks (one solo, two assists), the most of the night.

Jake Whyte collected a game-high 10 kills for the Pioneers, followed by Colby Landry (7) and Dane Loup (6). Shaun Kampshoff handed out 24 assists, while Taylor West accounted for the remaining three. Kampshoff (2) and Loup (1) were responsible for TU's aces. West tallied four digs, a team-best, one ahead of Loup, Kampshoff, Landry, and Arthur Della Nina. Deklan Wingo and Kampshoff both finished with a solo block and a block assist, while Shaphar Grant notched a single solo block.

Grand Canyon ended the match with a .364 hitting percentage with 35 kills and 11 attack errors on 66 total attempts. Tusculum totaled 28 kills, 20 errors, and 79 swings for a .101 hitting percentage. The Lopes finished with the advantage over the Pioneers in aces (5-3), assists (32-27), digs (28-19), and total blocks (7-4).

Tusculum continues its stand at Grand Canyon on Saturday, March 19. The Pioneers will have a rematch against the hosting Lopes at 7 p.m. EST, followed by 10 p.m. EST match against nationally-ranked Benedictine Mesa.
