Pioneers fall from IVA unbeaten ranks in home loss to Limestone

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Geraldo Rivera and James Chretien recorded 12 kills each in leading the Limestone men's volleyball team to 3-0 sweep over host Tusculum Friday night at Pioneer Arena.

The Saints (8-2, 2-0 IVA) won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 28-26 to remain undefeated in league play.

Limestone finished the match posting a .348 hitting percentage, posted by Rivera's .500 effort on his dozen kills on 18 attacks with three errors.

Tusculum's Jake Whyte paced the Pioneers with his team-high 11 kills, while also posting two service aces and three digs. Setter Shaun Kampshoff dished out 21 assists and notched two aces in the loss.

The Saints used 9-3 run midway through the opening set to take an 18-11 lead following an ace by Albert Warzocha. TU would trailed 22-13 before the Pioneers fought back with a 5-1 spurt to trim the LU lead to 23-18 following a kill by Whyte. But a kill by Warzocha on set-point sealed the 25-20 decision in the opening frame for the Saints.

The second set went back and forth early with Tusculum taking a 7-5 advantage on three straight points including a kill by Deklan Wingo and a Limestone hitting error. LU responded with a 12-3 spurt to go up 17-10 en route to capturing the second frame 25-13.

In the third set, the battle waged as the lead exchanged hands five times and was tied on nine occasions. With TU down 15-13, the Pioneers scored five unanswered points to take an 18-15 lead. Tusculum extended the lead to 23-19 following a LU attack error. But after a Limestone timeout, the Saints went on a 5-0 run of their own to recapture the lead at 24-23. TU got to a pair of set points, but Limestone answered both of them and scored the final three points of the ninth including blocks by Paul Stommel and Veit Bils on match point.

The Pioneers finished the match with 24 kills on 77 total attempts with 20 errors for their .052 hitting percentage. Limestone tallied 37 kills with 33 assists including 32 by Stommel.
