Off hitting night spoils NGU rematch for Pioneers

TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- The Tusculum University men's volleyball team faced North Greenville for the second time this season on Tuesday (Feb. 1) night and was defeated by the host.

The Crusaders (3-2) won by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-14 to sweep the season series over the Pioneers (0-4).

North Greenville had nine players record a kill, led by six from both Diego Rosich and Gregory Torres. Sergio Carrillo steered the offense with 27 assists, while Torres and Michael de la Cruz landed a pair of service aces. Rosich also tallied a team-high six digs and four total blocks (four assists) for the Crusaders. Emanuel Adames (two solo, two assists) and de la Cruz (four assists) notched four blocks as well.

Deklan Wingo and Jake Whyte accounted for nearly half of Tusculum's kills with their five apiece. Dane Loup (4), Colby Landry (4), and Shaphar Grant (3) rounded out the scoring column. Shaun Kampshoff dished out all 20 assists for the Pioneers on the evening. He also finished with a team-best two aces, with Grant tallying the remaining service point. As the starting libero, Ross Miller scooped up a career-high nine digs. Wingo is credited with two total blocks in the match, one solo and one assist.

North Greenville ended the match with a .296 hitting percentage with 32 kills and 11 attack errors on 71 total attempts. Tusculum totaled 21 kills, 21 errors, and 73 swings for an even .000 hitting percentage. The Crusaders led the Pioneers in assists (31-20), digs (27-20), aces (7-3), and total blocks (9-4).

Tusculum opens Independent Volleyball Association (IVA) play on Friday (Feb. 4) as part of a five-match homestand. The Pioneers are currently scheduled to host Alderson Broaddus for a 7 p.m. first serve.
