Pioneers take 4-0 sweep of UVA Wise

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team completed a 4-0 sweep of UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (5-9, 3-4 SAC) took the doubles point from the Cavaliers (10-7, 2-4 SAC) then won three matches in straight sets to earn their third shutout victory of the season.

In doubles, Anton Krondell and Miles Ray defeated Miguel De Rueda and Arne Fassbender 6-2 at flight two, and the Pioneers clinched the point at flight three as Nathan Matsuguma and Angelos Avgeris defeated Daniel Gonzalez Garza and Diego Pedrero by a 6-2 score.

In singles, Matsuguma beat Gonzalez 6-2, 6-3 at flight four to put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the match. Kai Poelchau defeated Vanja Vojinovic 6-4, 6-2 at flight six, and with the other three singles matches in a third set, Ray finished off the win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Yi-Hsuan Chen at flight five.

The Pioneers were scheduled to host Methodist on Friday, March 28 in a non-conference match, but the contest has been postponed due to the Monarchs needing to reschedule a USA South match against Pfeiffer for that date. Tusculum's next match will now be Saturday, March 29 at Lenoir-Rhyne beginning at 1:30 p.m.
