
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- Carson-Newman University picked up a 4-1 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Wednesday afternoon at the Catlett Tennis Complex.
The 48th-ranked Eagles (5-3, 3-1 SAC) fell behind 1-0 after doubles, but won all four singles contests over the Pioneers (4-8, 2-3 SAC), who lost their sixth match to a ranked team this spring.
In doubles, Rens Verhaar and Will Gee beat Gjorgji Jankulovski and Louis Keenan 6-2 at flight one, and Nathan Matsuguma teamed with Angelos Avgeris for a 7-6 win over Matthew Saunders and Leonard Baecker at flight three to give Tusculum a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Paul Gayk defeated Matsuguma 7-6, 6-3 at flight three and Jankulovski beat Verhaar 7-5, 7-5 at flight two to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead in the match. Carson-Newman would rally to win the final two matches, as Saunders beat Miles Ray 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at flight five and Baecker defeated Sarthak Sharma 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at flight six to clinch the win.
The Pioneers will visit Limestone on Saturday, March 22 beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Saints beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-1 on Wednesday to move into a tie for seventh place in the SAC with Tusculum and Anderson at 2-3.
