
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Purdue Northwest won the decisive singles match and came away with a 4-3 victory over Tusculum University in non-conference men's tennis Monday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 21st-ranked Pride (12-3) trailed 2-0 in the match but won four of the final five singles matches against the Pioneers (4-7), with Samuel Dickson taking a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 win over Nathan Matsuguma at flight two in the final match of the day.
The Pioneers claimed the doubles point as Matsuguma teamed with Angelos Avgeris for a 6-4 win at flight three over Dani Chicano Melero and Daniel Sroka, followed by a 6-2 win by Anton Krondell and Miles Ray at flight two over Joao Martins and Francisco Lanusse.
Gee defeated Melero 6-2, 6-1 at flight three of singles to give Tusculum a 2-0 lead, but Alex van Lumich downed Rens Verhaar 6-1, 6-4 at flight one and Lanusse rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Avgeris at flight five to tie the match at 2-2. The Pride took a brief 3-2 lead as Sroka beat Kai Poelchau 7-5, 6-3 at flight six, but Ray quickly retied the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) victory over Martins at flight four.
In the deciding match, Dickson rallied in the first-set tiebreaker to take the lead before Matsuguma came back from 3-4 in the second set to force the deciding third set. Dickson went up 3-0 in the third but Matsuguma won three straight games to tie the score at 3-3. However, Dickson would break Matsuguma twice to claim the match.
The Pioneers visit Carson-Newman on Wednesday, March 19 for a South Atlantic Conference match beginning at 1:30 p.m.
