Pioneers blank Newberry 4-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University defeated Newberry College 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (3-4, 1-1 SAC) held on for the doubles point against the Wolves (3-6, 2-2 SAC) and won the first three completed singles matches to finish off the sweep.

In doubles, Nathan Matsuguma and Angelos Avgeris beat Senthen Reddy and Lucas Mruk 6-4 at flight three. After Newberry picked up a 7-5 win at flight one, the duo of Anton Krondell and Miles Ray beat David Negzaoui and Joshua Fritz 6-3 at flight two to put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the match.

Matsuguma beat Fritz 6-2, 6-2 at flight three and Krondell downed Negzaoui 6-4, 6-2 at flight two to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead. With the remaining four matches all going to a third set, it was Ray who closed out the victory as he beat Reddy 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at flight five.

The Pioneers are home to take on 18th-ranked Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m. The Railsplitters won their seventh match in a row to improve to 13-1 overall with a 4-1 victory at Coker on Saturday.
