
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Tusculum University earned a 5-2 victory over Lees-McRae College in non-conference men's tennis Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers (2-2) swept doubles from the Bobcats (3-2) and took four of the six singles matches to pick up the victory.
In doubles, Rens Verhaar and Will Gee defeated Isaac Yang and Ezequiel Arce at flight one by a 6-1 score, with Anton Krondell and Nathan West beating Max Borisov and Tenzin Dorji 6-4 at flight two. At flight three, Nathan Matsuguma and Angelos Avgeris were a 6-1 winner over Marco Laguna and Andrew Kunaka.
In singles play, Krondell outlasted Yang 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 at flight two, and Matsuguma took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Laguna at flight three. At flight four, Miles Ray beat Kunaka 6-3, 6-2 with Gee beating Dorji 6-2, 6-2 at flight six. Both wins for the Bobcats came via a supertiebreaker in place of the third set.
Tusculum will be home on Friday, Feb. 28 to play nationally-ranked North Georgia, starting at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
