Pioneers beat King 6-1 in home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University defeated King University 6-1 in non-conference men's tennis Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (1-1) swept doubles from the Tornado (0-1) and then won five of the six singles matches to give head coach Garcian D'Cruz his first victory at Tusculum.

In doubles play, Anton Krondell and Rens Verhaar defeated Bar Meshel and Danny Neleman 6-1 at flight one, Nathan Matsuguma and Angelos Avgeris beat Hoto Tajima and Caetano Luzzi 6-2 at flight two, and at flight three Miles Ray teamed with Felipe Velasquez Quintana for a 6-2 win over Rhys Halcrow and Rohan Chalisgaonkar.

The Pioneers went up 2-0 in the match as Ray beat Tajima 6-2, 6-2 at flight three, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win by Matsuguma over Meshel at flight one. Isaac Wolff clinched the match for the Pioneers moments after Matsuguma's win as he beat Chalisgaonkar 6-0, 6-2 at flight six.

Tusculum's two other match victories came in super tiebreakers, as Sarthak Sharma rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, (10-7) win over Halcrow at flight four, and Kai Poelchau came back to beat Neleman 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, (10-4) at flight two.

The Pioneers are slated to host North Georgia on Friday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
