Pioneers defeat Emory & Henry, fall to Catawba on Senior Day

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team completed its 2024 home schedule on Sunday with a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches. The Pioneers lost 6-1 to Catawba College and beat Emory & Henry College 4-2 in the second contest of the afternoon.

The 29th-ranked Pioneers (15-6, 8-3 SAC) have locked up the fourth seed in the SAC Men's Tennis Tournament, with quarterfinal action scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina. Tusculum will conclude its regular season on Monday at 3 p.m. with a match at UVA Wise.

The 33rd-ranked Indians (12-6, 11-1 SAC) earned a sweep of doubles and won the first three singles matches to clinch the victory against the Pioneers. Two of Catawba's singles wins came in rallies from a set down.

Tusculum's lone point came at flight three, where Anton Krondell beat Marko Sudar 8-4 in a pro set.

The Pioneers bounced back for the victory against the Wasps (2-18, 0-12 SAC) by taking the doubles point before winning three of the five completed singles matches.

In doubles, Tusculum lost the first completed match but Miles Ray and JP Knell beat Nathan Spurling and Diego Alvarez 7-6 at flight two, and Will Gee teamed with Krondell for a 7-6 win over Kartik Parhar and Niclas Naedele at flight one to give the Pioneers the team point.

Tusculum went up 2-0 as Tijn van Gorkom beat Will Bayliss 6-4, 6-2, but an early retirement brought the Wasps back within 2-1. The Pioneers built their lead to 3-1 as Felipe Velasquez Quintana defeated Alvarez 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 at flight six, but a three-set tiebreaker win for Emory & Henry left the Pioneers with a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining. Sarthak Sharma delivered the clincher for Tusculum as he downed Spurling at flight five by a 6-0, 6-2 score.
