Pioneers back to SAC action with 4-3 win at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- Tusculum University picked up its sixth straight victory as the Pioneers defeated Coker University 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Saturday afternoon at Byerly Park.

The 50th-ranked Pioneers (9-3, 2-0 SAC) trailed 1-0 after doubles, but won the first three singles matches to take the lead for good from the Cobras (2-8, 1-3 SAC).

In doubles, Tusculum earned its lone win at flight three where Rens Verhaar and Tijn van Gorkom defeated Andy Huynh and Joao Casas by a 6-4 score, after Coker had already clinched the team point.

The Pioneers knotted the match 1-1 as Nemanja Subanovic picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at flight one over Thibaut Decaluwe. Ivan Ivars beat Casas 6-4, 6-3 at flight five for a 2-1 lead, and Will Gee downed Samuel Winter 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at flight three for a 3-1 Tusculum lead.

Tusculum would clinch the match at flight six, where van Gorkom defeated Bernardo Peralta by a 6-1, 6-4 score. The Cobras won two of the final three singles matches, including a super tiebreaker victory at flight four.

The Pioneers, who have played their last seven matches on the road, will return to the Nichols Tennis Complex to host Anderson on Sunday at 2 p.m.
