Pioneers earn 4-3 road win at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Tusculum University pulled out a 4-3 victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Thursday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.

The Pioneers (4-3, 1-0 SAC) went up 1-0 in doubles and built a 3-0 lead in singles before the Wolves (2-5, 1-1 SAC) came back to within 3-2 with two matches remaining.

In doubles, Rens Verhaar and Tijn van Gorkom defeated James Vincent and Noel Bartz 6-1 at flight three, and the Pioneers clinched the point at flight one as Nemanja Subanovic and Anton Krondell picked up a 6-4 victory over David Negzaoui and Joshua Fritz.

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the match as Yuki Ikeda defeated Thilo Lorenz 6-2, 6-0 at flight six, and Ivan Ivars was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Lucas Mruk at flight four. Newberry would win matches at flights two and five to pull within 3-2, but Verhaar clinched the win as he rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fritz at flight three.

Tusculum will resume its SAC schedule when the Pioneers travel to Coker on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
