Pioneers split two matches at PTR Collegiate Cup

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team participated in the PTR Collegiate Cup on Saturday at Saddlebrook Resort.

The Pioneers (3-1) defeated Georgia College 4-3, then fell 4-0 to third-ranked Saint Leo in their second match of the day.

Tusculum will return to action when the Pioneers host North Georgia on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

TUSCULUM 4, GEORGIA COLLEGE 3
Freshman Tijn van Gorkom delivered the clinching point at flight six with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Enzo Sergi. The Pioneers trailed 1-0 after doubles and 2-1 in singles before rallying to take a 3-2 lead in the match.

In doubles, Nemanja Subanovic and Anton Krondell beat Sebastian Nunez and Sergi 6-4 at flight one, but the Bobcats won the first and third completed matches to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Pioneers leveled the score at flight three, as Krondell beat Rodrigo Perez Crespo 6-4, 6-1. Trailing 2-1, the Pioneers again knotted the match as Subanovic earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at flight one over Jorge Robinson. Rens Verhaar beat Noe Villen 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at flight four to put Tusculum up 3-2, but Georgia College came back to even the score at 3-3 and set up the deciding match between van Gorkom and Sergi.

The third-ranked Lions swept doubles and won the first three singles matches against the Pioneers. In one of the unfinished matches, Verhaar took a set off Nicholas Bacella at flight four as the players went to a third set just before the match was ended.
