Pioneers compete at Eagle Invitational

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team participated in the Eagle Invitational at Carson-Newman University on Friday.

The Pioneers won five of the six singles matches played against Bluefield State University, and took two of six doubles matches against the Big Blues and the host Eagles.

In singles against Bluefield State, Will Gee earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Teddy Teddy Razafindratsima and Sarthak Sharma earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Pablo Perez.

Tusculum also had three victories in matches that went to a super tiebreaker. Rens Verhaar beat Jose Marquez 7-6, 3-6, (11-9), Yuki Ikeda was a 4-6, 6-3, (11-9) winner over Mateo Aldaz, and Ivan Ivars picked up a 6-0, 4-6, (10-3) victory over Merlin Mazalto.

In doubles, Nemanja Subanovic and Miles Ray beat Carson-Newman's Marc Janse and Gjorgji Jankulovski by an 8-6 score, and Sharma and Ivars teamed for a 6-3 win over the Bluefield State duo of Luis Agullo and Mazalto.

Tusculum will close its fall schedule on Saturday, Oct. 21 when the Pioneers host North Greenville at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
