Pioneers receive NCAA bid, to play at Flagler on Friday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team has earned the seventh seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional and will play Flagler College in the opening round on Friday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Flagler Tennis Center in St. Augustine, Florida.

The Pioneers (17-6) received an at-large bid after finishing as runner-up in the South Atlantic Conference Championship tournament to Wingate. Tusculum is making its eighth NCAA Division II Tournament appearance and second in the past three years, and is seeking its first-ever victory in NCAA competition.

The Saints (16-6) lost 4-1 to Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship match on Sunday. Flagler, ranked eighth in the latest ITA Division II National Team Rankings, advanced to the NCAA Division II semifinals last season before losing to eventual champion Barry.

The winner of Friday's match between the Saints and Pioneers will face the winner of the other first-round match between third-seeded Lander (15-4) and sixth-seeded Wingate (20-2) on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. The winner of Saturday's match will be one of 16 teams to move on to the NCAA Division II Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida from May 11-16.

The other half of the Southeast Region will be hosted by Columbus State, and will included eighth-seeded Belmont Abbey from Conference Carolinas, fourth-seeded Augusta and fifth-seeded North Georgia. The winner of that sub-regional will join the Flagler site winner at nationals.
