INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team is among 10 teams listed under consideration in the first NCAA Division II Southeast Region ranking of the 2023 season, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Through Monday, Tusculum had a 10-4 record against Division II opponents, and the Pioneers are one of three South Atlantic Conference schools under consideration in the region, along with Carson-Newman (7-6) and Wingate (11-1).
The Pioneers are 1-3 against ranked teams from the Southeast Region, with a victory over Carson-Newman and losses to Flagler, North Georgia and Young Harris. Overall, Tusculum is 2-4 against all regionally-ranked opponents, with a victory over Charleston (Atlantic Region) and a loss to Lee (South Region).
Other teams under consideration from the Southeast Region include Augusta, Columbus State, Flagler, Lander, North Georgia and Young Harris from the Peach Belt Conference, along with Francis Marion from Conference Carolinas.
The first regional ranking of the season lists the teams that are under consideration in alphabetical order. The national committee will issue rankings on April 12 and 19 and release the selections to the NCAA Championship field on April 24.
A total of eight teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship from the Southeast Region. Three bids will go to the conference tournament champions from the South Atlantic Conference, the Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas, with five at-large selections. Preliminary round action will begin on campus sites on Friday, April 28.
The Pioneers will resume their schedule on Monday at home against Newberry beginning at 12:30 p.m., starting a stretch of four matches in four days that include home matches with Wingate on Tuesday and Emory & Henry on Wednesday, along with a visit to Catawba to end the regular season next Thursday, April 13.
