TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team gained one position to 42nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Team Rankings, the ITA announced this week.
The Pioneers (10-7, 7-3 South Atlantic Conference) bumped up from 43rd last week and are among eight SAC teams in the expanded ITA Team Rankings. This week, the ITA increased the number of teams in its rankings from 50 to 75.
Senior Frank Bonacia remains in the singles rankings at 58th this week, as he hold a 15-9 overall record and a 5-5 mark in SAC matches. Bonacia is 1-2 against ranked opponents this season, and has a 46-19 singles record in three seasons with the Pioneers.
Joining the Pioneers in this week's rankings are Carson-Newman (23rd), Anderson (27th), Wingate (31st), Queens (36th), Lenoir-Rhyne (37th), Limestone (56th) and Lincoln Memorial (64th). Tusculum has gone 3-3 against the other seven ranked SAC teams, and the Pioneers host Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon.
The top five in the ITA Division II National Team Rankings are Columbus State, Barry, Saint Leo, Embry-Riddle and North Georgia, which beat Tusculum by a 4-3 score on March 25. Other Pioneer non-conference opponents that are ranked are Charleston (17th), Lee (20th), Belmont Abbey (25th) and Young Harris (67th).
The ITA Rankings Algorithm is based on an accumulation of win points and loss points, accounting for a win-loss record, the strength of schedule, and the depth/significance of wins and losses. As the season progresses, the value of each win and loss adjusts to reflect the most recent ranking of the opponent.
Tusculum will play Lincoln Memorial on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. Before the match, the Pioneers will honor seniors Jacco Mensinga and Vadzim Raitsou.
